TrailScapes Pty Ltd was established in 2007 and has been providing trail auditing, planning design and construction services for government agencies and private landholders ever since. Detailed below are some of our past projects.

SAMFORD RECREATION TRAIL LINKAGE FEASIBILITY STUDY, MORETON BAY QUEENSLAND

Client: Moreton Bay Regional Council
Dates: February – March 2020

TrailScapes was engaged to assess the feasibility of 3 recreational trail routes connecting two large trail networks in Samford Valley QLD. The work included advising of required trail infrastructure, SWOT analysis and costed options. The project is proving successful as TrailScapes presented two new options that have now been endorsed as preferred options by the project team. 

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS AND TRAILS STAGING PLAN, MORAWA, WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Client: Shire of Morawa
Dates: April – July 2019

TrailScapes collaborated with Hudson Howells to conduct an economic analysis and trails staging plan for the development of a 100km trail network at Koolanooka Hills east of Morawa. The work included community engagement sessions. 

The consultants traveled together to the Shire of Morawa (WA),  studied the area, held community engagement sessions. The team also communicated efficiently remotely once the on-ground work was completed and the project was delivered on time and budget. 

MUTAWINTJI NATIONAL PARK TRAIL ASSESSMENTS, NEW SOUTH WALES

Client: NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service
Dates: Feb – Apr 2020

TrailScapes has assessed the condition of Mutawintji NP trails and associated trails infrastructure. We are providing a range of management and upgrade options to restore the trails to the desired or realistically achievable trail classifications. The assessment and costed recommendations will assist The Board and NPWS in determining future maintenance, upgrades and management of the Mutawintji NP trail network.

ADELAIDE HILLS RECREATIONAL TRAILS AUDIT, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Client: Adelaide Hills Council
Dates: Jan 2020 – ongoing

TrailScapes is undertaking an audit of the entire Adelaide Hills Region trails network and cycling routes. The work includes condition assessments and costed repair advice for existing trails, as well as feasibility commentary for proposed trails and cycling routes.

MORETON BAY RECREATIONAL TRAILS AUDIT, MORETON BAY QUEENSLAND

Client: Moreton Bay Regional Council
Dates: Dec 2019 – Jan 2020

TrailScapes conducted a thorough audit of 174 trail assets across the Moreton Bay Regional Council area. The work included condition assessments using the IPWEA condition assessment system and applying trail classifications to the respective trails. TrailScapes provided prioritised, objective and costed management options for MBRC to assist in the capital investment and maintenance programs. 

WILABALANGALOO TRAIL FEASIBILITY, BERRI SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Client: Berri Barmera Council
Dates: Oct – Dec 2019

TrailScapes conducted a feasibility study of the Riverview Drive to Wilabalangaloo Trail concept. The study included detailed trail alignment options, cost estimates, typical design drawings and maintenance schedules.

MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL RISK ASSESSMENT, WOODLEIGH SCHOOL VICTORIA

Client: Woodleigh School, Penbank Campus
Dates: Aug – Sept 2019

TrailScapes conducted a thorough audit and risk assessment of the schools MTB facilities. We provided risk management advice and future investment opportunities. 

MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL NETWORK ASSESSMENT, PLENTY GORGE VICTORIA

Client: Parks Victoria
Dates: May 2019 – Aug 2019 

TrailScapes conducted a thorough audit and risk assessment of the trail network in Plenty Gorge Park Victoria. The assessment process applied trail classifications and provided recommendations to manage identified safety, sustainability and visitor experience issues. TrailScapes worked with cultural heritage advisors and ecologists to determine suitable trail styles and alignments.

GLOSSY BLACK RESERVE TRAIL PLANNING, REEDY CREEK QUEENSLAND

Client: City of Gold Coast
Dates: Jun – Aug 2019

TrailScapes planned a trail network based on set criteria by the client. Three options were presented with one selected.  TrailScapes also completed the detailed design for the project. Construction is due to commence mid 2020.

TANGLEFOOT TO CASCADES TRAIL REPORT, TOOLANGI STATE FOREST VICTORIA

Client: Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Victoria
Dates: May – Jun 2019

TrailScapes conducted a thorough assessment of the Tanglefoot to Cascades Walking Trail Concept for DELWP, VIC. The work included a detailed field assessment of the proposed trail segments and providing costed solutions and options to manage sustainability, risk, experience and construction issues identified. 

HAUNTED HILLS BIKE PARK, PLANNING AND DESIGN, GIPPSLAND VICTORIA

Client: Gippsland MTB Club and Latrobe City Council Victoria
Dates: Jun 2019 – ongoing

TrailScapes has planned and designed a $1 million mountain bike park that includes 13km of trail, pump track, car parks, sign systems, amenities, shelters and BBQs. We are managing the entire approval process including vegetation clearance, water affecting permits and all the required council planning and construction permits. The project is due for completion by December 2020.

TOMAREE COASTAL WALK FEASIBILITY REPORT, NEW SOUTH WALES

Client: NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service
Dates: Apr – Jun 2019

TrailScapes conducted a thorough assessment of the Tomaree Coastal Walking Trail Concept for NSW National Park and Wildlife Service. The work included a detailed field assessment of the proposed trail segments and provided costed solutions and options to manage sustainability, risk, experience and construction issues identified. 

Several of the proposed alignments were not assessed as feasible or sustainable and required a considered response to the client. The report will be used to secure funding and proceed to the detailed design stage.

LITTLE ISLANDS TRAIL DESIGN, STREAKY BAY SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Client: District Council of Streaky Bay, South Australia
Dates: Dec 2018 – Feb 2019

TrailScapes planned and designed a shared-use trail connecting the Streaky Bay Township with Little Islands precinct. The project included working with challenging property boundaries and local stakeholders. The trail was successfully constructed by council staff under the guidance of TrailScapes project managers.

STATE FOREST TRAIL ASSESSMENTS, BRIGHT AND MOUNT BEAUTY, VICTORIA

Client: Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Victoria
Dates: 2018 – 2019

TrailScapes conducted a thorough and methodical assessment of selected trails on State Forest land in the town of Bright. The trails were assessed in their current ‘promoted’ direction of travel and classification as provided by Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP). The trails were assessed for compliance against the current International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) Australia trail classifications and existing, emerging and potential visitor safety and trail sustainability issues.   

WESTLEIGH MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL ASSESSMENT, NEW SOUTH WALES

Client: Hornsby Shire Council, New South Wales
Dates: Aug – Oct 2018

TrailScapes conducted a thorough audit of the Westleigh MTB Trails. The trails were assessed in their current ‘promoted’ direction of travel and classification as provided by Hornsby Shire Council (HSC).  The trails were assessed for compliance against the current International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) Australia trail classifications and existing, emerging and potential localised trail specific impacts. The trails were also assessed for existing, emerging and potential environmental impacts as defined in the Review of Environmental Factors (REF), Westleigh Natural Areas, December 2017 and other existing and potential impacts observed.

ROSIA PARK MASTER PLAN, LOGAN QUEENSLAND

Client: Complete Urban Architects Queensland
Dates: Dec 2018 – Nov 2019

TrailScapes worked with Complete Urban Architects to design a multi-use trail network for the Rosia Park Master Plan. TrailScapes also provided cycling specific advice on the pump track, velodrome, criterium track and skills park.

MOUNT CLAY MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL MASTER PLAN, VICTORIA

Client: Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Victoria
Dates: Oct 2018

DELWP engaged TrailScapes to work with local and regional FFMV staff as well as local MTB clubs to develop an operationally feasible master plan for the Mount Clay MTB trail network with the major focus on improving the existing track through detailed trail design and classification, drainage improvements and infrastructure improvements.  TrailScapes delivered a master plan that provided a way to meet the key outcomes of the trail network.

MOUNT REMARKABLE NATIONAL PARK TRAIL OPPORTUNITIES, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Client: Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, South Australia
Dates: Feb – Aug 2018

TrailScapes was engaged by the Department of Environment, Water & Natural Resources (DEWNR) to deliver a mountain bike trail opportunity report and conceptual alignments of over 100kms of trails for Mt Remarkable National Park. In response to the Mount Remarkable National Park Management Plan (Amendment 2013) which supports sustainable cycling access, the project aimed to identify high quality cycling trail opportunities that contribute to the Southern Flinders tourism region as a mountain bike destination for nature-based tourism. 

ARTHURS SEAT NATIONAL PARK TRAIL AUDIT, VICTORIA

This high-level Trail Audit Summary Report identifies the location of the existing trail network, assesses its condition, usage and opportunities for improvement and future development.

HONG KONG COUNTRY PARKS TRAIL ASSESSMENT, HONG KONG

Client: Hong Kong’s Department of Agriculture, Fishers and Conservation
Dates: Jul – Sep 2017

Hong Kong’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation contracted to audit a number of Mountain Bike trails to assess their suitability and sustainability, and provide recommendations for improvements and future development. After spending time on the ground, TrailScapes then worked with the Department to provide a comprehensive report that will allow them to implement changes in order to improve the quality of their network of Mountain bike trails in Country Parks.

DINNER PLAINS MTB TRAILS FINAL DESIGN AND TRAIL CONSTRUCTION PLAN, VICTORIA

Client: Alpine Shire Council
Dates: Dec – Jun 2017

TrailScapes and Birdseye Studios were engaged by Alpine Shire Council to prepare a site-specific Trail Construction Plan for a series of new and realigned trails in Dinner Plain, Victoria. Finalising alignments as well as providing details on the environmental impact of the construction and upgrade of mountain bike trails were required to obtain planning approval. This plan provides a clear understanding of the environmental impact and clear guidelines to be followed during trail construction in order to keep the disturbance to a minimum. 

BURNSIDE COUNCIL TRAILS STRATEGY, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

SKILLS PARK / PUMP TRACK CONCEPT PLAN – NOTTINGHAM UNIVERSITY, NINGBO CHINA
